Woodland Garden

East Hampton, NY

Project Team

Set directly along Three Mile Harbor in East Hampton, New York, this residential landscape is conceived almost entirely as garden—a quiet woodland environment shaped around mature trees, natural topography, and views toward the bay. Designed by Landelier Landscape Atelier, the project reflects a naturalistic approach to landscape design in East Hampton and the Hamptons, with an emphasis on native planting, site preservation, and understated outdoor spaces.

All significant existing trees were preserved, while the understory was extensively restored with a predominantly native woodland planting palette. Layers of ferns, grasses, groundcovers, shrubs, and woodland perennials create a shifting tapestry of greens beneath the canopy, allowing foliage, texture, stone, and light to define the garden throughout the seasons.

A small network of mulched paths follows the existing grades and moves gently through the property. Boulders and dry-stacked stone walls subtly support the slopes while reinforcing the natural character of the site. Moss-covered benches, hammocks, and tucked-away viewpoints create informal places to pause and experience the garden from different elevations.

At mid-slope, a wood-burning fire pit overlooks Three Mile Harbor, creating a relaxed gathering place within the woodland. Rather than imposing a rigid structure on the landscape, the design works with the existing terrain and vegetation, resulting in an East Hampton garden that feels established, immersive, and deeply connected to its waterfront setting.
