Located on a compact residential property in the heart of Bridgehampton, New York, this contemporary garden brings a distinctly European sense of order, proportion, and restraint to a highly constrained Hamptons site. Designed by Landelier Landscape Atelier, the project demonstrates how thoughtful landscape design in Bridgehampton and the Hamptons can create privacy, improve circulation, and make a small property feel significantly more spacious.
The primary challenge was reorganizing the driveway and front entry so that the arrival sequence felt intentional rather than dominated by cars. Within the limited footprint, every element had to perform multiple functions, making a carefully structured planting strategy central to the design.
Pleached hornbeams create a strong architectural screen along the property edge, underplanted with a clipped evergreen hedge for year-round privacy at eye level. Together, these layered plantings provide screening without the visual heaviness of a conventional tall hedge, preserving light and openness within the compact Bridgehampton garden.
At the front walk, an existing ‘Dr. Merrill’ magnolia was carefully relocated and centered on the entry axis. The mature tree now serves as both a focal point and a soft screen from the street, giving the entrance greater depth, permanence, and connection to the established landscape.
The resulting Hamptons residential landscape is deliberately simple—defined by strong geometry, architectural planting, and a restrained material and plant palette. Every element works harder within the small footprint, creating a private, refined garden that feels calm, organized, and considerably more generous than its dimensions suggest.
